Saadiq Wales, Berkshire Jr./Sr. graduate awarded with $180k in scholarships & aid

CANAAN, NY- Saadiq Wales, a residential student at Berkshire Farm Center and Services for Youth for the past five years, was the recipient of over $180K in financial aid and scholarship money to allow him to attend college in the fall. “This is the largest scholarship awarded for one student in Berkshire history and with all of his hard work, it is much earned and deserved,” said Julie Brennan, VP of Development and Marketing and Saadiq’s mentor at Berkshire.

Among the scholarships received by Wales, is the Mott Family Scholarship. This scholarship allows for Berkshire Jr./Sr. High School graduates to continue their education beyond  high school and supports an opportunity for life-long learning and success.

Wales, who is originally from Brooklyn, NY has been accepted into St. Francis College located in Brooklyn Heights starting this fall. “I was so excited when I found out I was accepted to St. Francis College,” said Wales. “Berkshire gave me the skills and confidence I need to be successful in college and I can’t wait to come back next year as an alum and speak to the class of 2018.” Wales admits that since his time at Berkshire Farm Center, he has changed and has become a lot more mature and independent. “I used to be a follower,” said Wales “But now I know who I am, who I want to become, and how to get there.”

“We are very proud of Saadiq,” said Jim Dennis, President and CEO of Berkshire Farm Center. “He has come a long way and our support and guidance will continue long after he leaves Berkshire.”

Wales is planning on focusing on a major in Business Management and the Entrepreneur Program.  He is also considering a minor in Writing.  He says he wants to create something bigger then himself. “I came to Berkshire without a plan, but the staff here has changed my mindset,” said Wales. “Now I can focus, and I have a set plan for once. Without Berkshire I wouldn’t have one.” Berkshire Jr./Sr. High School Recognition & Graduation Day was held on Friday, June 23, 2017 at Berkshire Farm Center and Services for Youth’s Canaan Campus.
